I have never ever been so completely moved to actual tears by something posted on DA before. So for that...I feel I need to share. I have no more words for this, just complete and utter awe. And sobbing. There's definitely some sobbing going on ;~~~~~~~~~;

What happened in Japan is truly heartbreaking. It really is. But, I feel one area of this is getting out of control. I counted at least 10 journal entries in the last 2 days alone talking about "all the people" making comments about the whole "Japan/Pearl Harbor thing."

Now, don't get me wrong. I do NOT agree with those statements. Not even a little bit. But I'm AMAZED that people are even commenting about it. This is the first time I have ever seen so much exposure for the headline "NEWSFLASH: Random Guy says hateful shit on the internet!" I mean, this is pretty common place. You can't step anywhere on the internet without somebody spewing something hateful and unnecessary. We've all seen it. So...why are we surprised? People saying hateful, racist and bigoted stuff on the internet is sad, but it's certainly not NEW.

What bugs me the most about this is that all of these journal, all this exposure, makes it seem like this mindset is a LOT more widespread than it is; makes it appear to be common place. Let me assure you, it's NOT. There are well over 300 MILLION people in America and close to 2 BILLION people on the internet world wide. So, even if you happen to find 1,000 hateful comments like this, that's less than 0.0003% of the American populace and 0.00004% of the Internet. So yes, while 1,000 hateful comments are sad and disgusting, it's still a very very small percentage and does not make this even close to the "epidemic" it appears to have become.

All these journals and news articles are doing is fanning the flames of hatred with MORE HATRED. The comments I'm seeing to counter the original comments are just as hatefilled. And do you really think this is the sort of thing that people dealing with this tragedy personally need to have their noses rubbed in? First tragedy, then fear, and now hate? So, I guess in summation, I just want to remind everybody of something that most of us heard when we were younger: The proper way to deal with a bully, is to just IGNORE them.  Because all you're doing with those links, is preaching a different kind of hate.


The second thing I wanted to address is the DONATING. Guys, be careful! A lot of these really small, unknown little-sister corporations popping up are SCAMS. It's a sad fact that in the face of disaster, there are a lot of people willing to take advantage of anybody trying to help. So make sure you do research into any company you plan to donate into. Or you can just donate to a large corporation, for example, something like The American Red Cross or The Catholic Relief Services. Your money will go to help not JUST Japan but anywhere there is need of a disaster relief. Try and remember, Japan isn't the ONLY country in need of assistance at this time. Don't forget about Haiti, New Zealand, Australia, and the thousands of other places around the world that are also in dire need of help.

So, let's pray for Japan...while we pray for the rest of the world as well.

Yet another rant journal

Ever since I joined DA so very many years ago, I've been coming across the same polls, the same journals, the same articles. All about the same things; the "best" art styles, mediums and subject matter: "Which one is better?" Well, one thing has been mulling around in my head forever and as long as I've waited, I've never seen a reply that very simply asks the question:

Why the hell do people care so much about what other people draw?

Honestly. I don't draw for anybody but me (and sometimes my friends). If you don't like somebody's choice of fanart then...too bad. If you don't like their style...too bad. There's a little arrow button on upper left hand side of your screen. Use that. The amount of people I've seen bitch at somebody for drawing fanart, a subject, or even things in a style they don't like is...overwhelming. There are a millions of artists here on DeviantArt and the most wonderful thing is that...almost everybody's different. Each person has a unique style and viewpoint to their art and that's what makes the community so great. If we followed all these journals about "My way is right and your way is wrong" we'd all be putting out the same cookie cutter picture; We'd all become Stepford Artists.

Now, I'm not saying that critique or suggestion is bad. Not at all. But there's a resounding difference between constructive criticism and out right douche-baggery bashing. Saying something like "My art is real art; Yours is not" makes you an over pretentious asshole. Plain and simple. It doesn't matter if you draw realism, anime or cartoons. It doesn't mater if you use pencils and markers, oil paints and acrylics, or a tablet and computer. To say "One medium/style is better, harder, or more talented" than another is outright offensive. You're undermining all the hard work somebody's done to get where they are. And nobody NOBODY has the right to do that.

You can be proud of what you've accomplished. And you SHOULD be. But to use that to degrade somebody else, is just WRONG. And when you do that, you're no better then a playground bully.

(Note: I'm not saying this about people who post personal polls and whatever for their own knowledge at what people want to see. They asked, so, they can't really complain about the answers, now can they? But my beef is when people use these to rally up their own personal validation to bigot against a particular style, subject, or medium.)
